The classic "I am a X" sentence — uses 是 to link two nouns (see 是 and Adjectives).

Pinyin: wǒ shì xuéshēng
Word-by-word: I (我) · am (是) · student (学生)

学生 is a compound: 学 (xué, "study") + 生 (shēng, "born / person"). Literally a "study-person".
