Location with 在

在 (zài) marks location. It plays two roles: a verb meaning "to be at/in/on", and a preposition before another verb meaning "(doing something) at a place".

As a verb: subject + 在 + place

  • 我 在 家。 "I'm at home."
  • 他 在 学校。 "He is at school."
  • 书 在 桌子 上。 "The book is on the table."

As a preposition: subject + 在 + place + verb

  • 我 在 家 吃饭。 "I eat at home."
  • 他 在 学校 学 中文。 "He studies Chinese at school."

Ongoing action: 正在 / 在 + verb

Putting 在 (or 正在) directly before a verb means the action is happening now:

  • 我 在 吃饭。 "I am eating right now."
  • 他 正在 看 书。 "He is reading."

Position words (used with 在)

  • 上 shàng — on / above
  • 下 xià — under / below
  • 里 lǐ — inside
  • 外 wài — outside
  • 前 qián — in front
  • 后 hòu — behind
